A large magnesium-grade dolomite deposit has been found in Kongtong District of Pingliang City, according to the Department of Natural Resources of Gansu Province. The newly-unearthed deposit holds over 700 million tonnes of smelter-grade dolomite ore with an average grade at 20.67% MgO, along with more than 300 million tonnes of dolomite suitable for construction industry. Its large scale, shallow depth, gentle dip, and consistent thickness make it ideal for open-pit mining.
Besides being a key raw material for magnesium production, the dolomite can also be used in refractory materials, metallurgical fluxes, glass, ceramics, and other industries, offering significant potential for comprehensive utilization.
The survey results will support the development of magnesium-grade dolomite resources in Pingliang and across Gansu, foster the magnesium-based new materials industry, and strengthen the region's strategic resource security.
