Zhongda Magnesium breaks ground on serpentine utilization project

Zhongda Magnesium Co., Ltd. in Toli, Xinjiang, has started construction on its serpentine comprehensive utilization project, designed to process 2.1 million tonnes of serpentine annually.
With a total investment of RMB14.7 billion (USD2.06 billion), the project uses serpentine as feedstock and employs a wet-process to fully separate valuable elements including magnesium, silicon, iron, nickel and cobalt. Magnesium metal is produced via evaporation-crystallization and dry electrolysis, while industrial silicon and nickel-cobalt-iron concentrates are also recovered.
Once fully operational, the green project is expected to produce 500,000 tonnes of magnesium metal, 330,000 tonnes of industrial silicon, 170,000 tonnes of iron concentrates, and 10,000 tonnes of nickel-cobalt concentrates per year. It is expected to generate around RMB18 billion (USD2.53 billion) in output value and RMB1 billion (USD140 million) in profit and taxes, helping create more than 3,000 jobs.
